Connecting VOICE to FINISH

In the usual case, there is nothing to set: VOICE finds FINISH on its own on the track network and connects to it. This page explains how, and what to do when it does not work.

Example: the Coupe Hollywood at the Starford oval. The FINISH computer is called “FINISH-Starford” (192.168.1.10); the “SONO” computer, connected to the public address system, runs VOICE.

1. The automatic connection

  1. In FINISH, check the broadcast

Broadcast module: the Announce FINISH on the network every 2 s and IP (TCP) boxes are checked by default. Give it a meaningful Name displayed by clients: “FINISH-Starford” (see Broadcast).

  2. Launch VOICE on SONO

The status changes from Searching for FINISH… (orange dot) to FINISH 192.168.1.10:8210 (green dot). The log notes “FINISH found: FINISH-Starford (192.168.1.10:8210)”.

A few seconds later: FINISH clock 13:30:05 (offset -1 ms, ± 1 ms). VOICE is ready.

  3. Check in FINISH

Broadcast, Connected clients: a VOICE “SONO” row, TCP link, and the clock offset.

  4. An announced race

Load a race whose record has Speech synthesis: it appears in Races received from FINISH, with the Voice (FINISH) column checked.

2. Two FINISH on the same network

Two tracks, two FINISH: VOICE does not pick one at random. The status says 2 FINISH found: choose below. and offers one button per FINISH, with its name. Click yours: VOICE remembers it by its name and will reconnect to it on its own at the next launches, even if its address changes. To switch tracks: Settings, Choose another FINISH at next launch, then restart VOICE.

3. Entering the FINISH address

Some networks (guest Wi-Fi, the arena network) block the announcement: VOICE stays on Searching for FINISH…. Then enter the address:

  1. Settings, Connect to FINISH

the Server (empty: found automatically) field: “192.168.1.10”; TCP port: 8210, unless FINISH uses another one.

  2. Restart VOICE

The connection takes effect at the next startup.

The status changes to Connecting to 192.168.1.10:8210… then FINISH 192.168.1.10:8210.

4. The workstation name

In FINISH, VOICE appears under the computer's name. With two VOICE computers (the public address system and a coach), give them meaningful names: Settings, Name of this workstation (seen in FINISH): “SONO”, “COACH”; then restart VOICE.

5. A dropout in the middle of a race

An unplugged cable, a Wi-Fi drop: the status turns orange again and the connection comes back on its own as soon as the network does. On reconnection, FINISH resends the state of all races, without replaying past laps: VOICE picks up at the next passings, without announcing old times. A bell received more than two seconds late does not ring.

6. If VOICE does not find FINISH

  • Same network? The two computers must see each other (same subnet for automatic discovery).
  • The Windows firewall: it must let VOICE receive the announcement (UDP, port 8212) and connect to FINISH (TCP, port 8210); the clock uses port 8213. Allow VOICE when Windows asks at the first launch.
  • Is the FINISH broadcast running? In FINISH, the broadcast status says “Broadcast: TCP :8210 · announcement · clock :8213”; if in doubt, Restart broadcast.
  • The announcement is blocked: enter the address.
