Choosing the voice and language

Each athlete is announced in their own language, by a voice of that language. The language is set in FINISH, the voice on the VOICE computer. Example: at the Coupe Hollywood, Saskia Brouwers and Lotte Verhaegen are announced in Dutch, Yuna Hasegawa in English, the others in French.

1. Install the voices on the VOICE computer

  1. The Windows voices

In Windows: Settings → Time & language → Speech → Add voices (Windows 11: Settings → Time & language → Speech → Manage voices → Add voices; Windows 10: Settings → Time & language → Speech → Add voices). Add a voice for each of your athletes' languages: French (Canadian or from France), English, Dutch… These are the “OneCore” voices. The older “SAPI” voices come with Windows or from a voice publisher.

LanguageTo add in WindowsWindows voices (OneCore)
    Italiano (it)Italian (Italy)Elsa, Cosimo
    Polski (pl)Polish (Poland)Paulina, Adam
    日本語 (ja)JapaneseHaruka, Ayumi, Ichiro
    中文(普通话) (zh)Chinese (Simplified, China)Huihui, Yaoyao, Kangkang
    한국어 (ko)KoreanHeami
    Русский (ru)Russian (Russia)Irina, Pavel

The Narrator's “natural” voices (Nanami, Xiaoxiao, SunHi…) are only offered to Narrator: VOICE does not see them.

  2. Restart VOICE

The list of voices is read at startup. The log summarizes it: “5 voices installed: fr 2, en 2, nl 1, es none, de none”.

  3. Voice tab

Each language shows Used: the selected voice. By default, VOICE chooses on its own (Canada first, OneCore before SAPI). To force one, choose it in the list; Automatic goes back to VOICE's choice.

  4. Listen

Test on each row: “Marie Tremblay, Tweede positie, nog 3 ronden, 31,4” in Dutch. Adjust the rate (a little faster if laps come thick and fast) and the volume so that the languages sound alike.

2. The computer's default language

Settings, Default language (athletes without a language, countdown): French at first. It is used for athletes without a language, for race starts, for the countdown and for the sentence after an elimination bell. A computer for an English-speaking audience: English. Two computers (two stands) can each have their own.

3. Each athlete's language, in FINISH

The language that counts is the one FINISH sends for the athlete. It comes from:

  • the EVENT .cfevent file: each athlete's language is passed to speech synthesis when the session is loaded;
  • the FINISH Athletes tab, Speech synthesis (ChronoFEED-VOICE) view: Language, for one athlete or a selection of athletes. It is kept for the athlete: it applies to all their races and competitions.

Without a language (Default), the athlete is announced in the default language of the VOICE computer.

4. A message in another language

In Say a message, choose the language to the right of the field before typing: the sentence is spoken by the voice of that language, and the message history is kept separately for each language.
