Glossary
The words of VOICE, in the sense the software uses them.
- Announcement
- A sentence VOICE has to say, with its language and its priority. Lap announcements are normal: they can be replaced or discarded. The final time, an elimination, an annotation, the start and a typed message are high: they go first and are never discarded. See When VOICE speaks.
- Announce (a race)
- The box in Races received from FINISH: this computer announces this race. Not to be confused with the FINISH Speech synthesis box.
- FINISH announcement (discovery)
- The message FINISH sends on the network every two seconds so that VOICE, the displays and SIM can find it without an address. See Connecting VOICE to FINISH.
- Countdown lock
- The last seconds of a timed race (ten by default), during which only the countdown speaks for this race.
- Bell
- The last lap signal. FINISH works out the moment and sends it; VOICE rings it. An elimination bell is followed by a sentence (“At the end of the next lap, 1 athlete will be eliminated.”).
- Target
- An athlete's minimum and maximum lap times (FINISH, Athletes tab); with the Target option, VOICE says “Too fast!” or “Too slow!”.
- Athlete unknown to FINISH
- An athlete for whom FINISH sent neither language nor options: VOICE applies the computer's default language and default options.
- Rate
- The speed of a voice, from −10 to 10 (0: normal), set per language (Throughput in the Voice tab).
- Countdown
- “5… 4… 3… 2… 1… Finish!” at the end of a timed race, each word on its second, on FINISH time.
- Queue
- The announcements waiting to be spoken, with their rules: one per athlete, six at most, twelve seconds at most.
- FINISH clock
- The time of the FINISH computer, measured continuously by VOICE (offset and accuracy): all race timing (countdown, bell, remaining time) runs on FINISH time.
- Log
- The list of what was said, cut off, discarded or missed, most recent at the top (300 lines).
- Language (of an athlete)
- The one they are announced in: the one FINISH sends for them, otherwise the computer's default language. Eleven languages: fr, en, nl, es, de, it, pl, ja, zh, ko, ru.
- Time reading
- The way a time is said: “62.4”, “1 minute and 2.4 seconds”, “2 4”… Ten readings, one per athlete. See The ten readings.
- Message
- A sentence typed by the announcer on the VOICE computer; spoken even in mute mode.
- Mute
- On the VOICE computer: no more automatic announcements (messages still go through, and so does the bell). For an athlete, in FINISH: nothing is announced for them.
- OneCore, SAPI
- The two families of Windows voices VOICE uses: OneCore, the voices from Windows Settings (including the Canadian ones); SAPI, the classic voices.
- Voice options
- What is said about an athlete on each lap: name, position, completed, to go, lap time, target, final time, speed; the spoken name, the time reading. Set in FINISH, Athletes tab.
- Pair
- In long track, a race of two athletes; its number makes VOICE say “Pair 3” at the start.
- Workstation
- A computer running VOICE, under a name (“SONO”) that FINISH shows among its connected clients. Several workstations can listen to the same FINISH.
- Speech synthesis (FINISH box)
- The box in the FINISH race record that lets VOICE announce the race; visible in the Voice (FINISH) column.
- Final time
- An athlete's finish time, said only once, always in full, never discarded.
- Too old
- A lap announcement that has waited longer than the maximum age (twelve seconds): it is not spoken.
