ChronoFEED VOICE Help

Voice

One voice per language: the computer's voice that will say the announcements in French, English, Dutch, Spanish or German, its rate and its volume. The voices are the Windows ones: VOICE installs none and uses no online service.

One voice per language. Each athlete is announced in their language (athlete record in FINISH). "OneCore" voices are those in Windows Settings → Time & language → Speech (you can add Canadian French, Canadian English…); "SAPI" voices are the classic voices. Automatic: the best voice on the computer for the language (Canada first).1

The SONO computer: two French voices, two English, one Dutch; no Spanish or German voice. English is set by hand to Linda.
  1. The reminder: one voice per language, OneCore or SAPI, automatic choice.
  2. One row per language: the chosen voice, the one actually used, the rate, the volume, Test.
  3. A language without a voice: its athletes are announced in the computer's default language (the log reports it once).

One row per language

Where: Voice

The eleven languages VOICE can speak: Français (fr), English (en), Nederlands (nl), Español (es), Deutsch (de), Italiano (it), Polski (pl), 日本語 (ja), 中文(普通话) (zh, Mandarin in simplified characters), 한국어 (ko), Русский (ru). The language of an announcement is the athlete's (set in FINISH), otherwise the computer's default language. An unknown code (“pt”, for example) is announced with the English words; “fr-CA” counts as “fr”.

If the computer has no voice for a language, the row says so (no voice installed for this language…): the athletes of that language are then announced in the computer's default language, rather than left silent, and the log notes it once. To install the voice, see Choosing the voice and language.

The chosen voice

Where: Voice, the list for each language

The voices installed on this computer for this language, in the form “Name (culture, engine)”: “Caroline (fr-CA, OneCore)”, “Hortense (fr-FR, SAPI)”. Two families of Windows voices:

  • OneCore: the voices from Windows Settings (Time & language → Speech → Add voices), including Canadian French and English;
  • SAPI: the classic “desktop” voices, installed with Windows or by a voice publisher.

Used: the voice that will actually speak. A chosen voice that is no longer installed (computer changed, voice removed) gives way to the automatic choice.

Automatic

Where: Voice, to the right of the list

Forgets the chosen voice: VOICE takes the best one on the computer for this language, first the Canadian ones (“fr-CA”, “en-CA”); for Chinese, the one from China (“zh-CN”), then Taiwan, the Hong Kong voice (“zh-HK”) speaking Cantonese; then OneCore before SAPI. This is the default setting for each language.

Rate (Throughput)

Where: Voice, Throughput slider; from −10 to 10, 0 by default

The speed of this language's voice. Above 0, it speaks faster (useful when laps come thick and fast in short track); below, more slowly. With a OneCore voice, the speed ranges from half to three times normal: below about −6, it does not slow down any further.

Volume

Where: Voice; from 0 to 100, 100 by default

The volume of this language's voice, relative to the others: so that a Dutch voice louder than the French one does not startle the stands. The overall volume is set on the public address system and in Windows. The bell does not depend on it.

Test

Where: Voice, at the end of each row

Says an example sentence in this language, with the voice, rate and volume shown, after the sentence in progress:

LanguageTest sentence
Français“Marie Tremblay, Deuxième position, 3 tours à faire, 31.4”
English“Marie Tremblay, Second position, 3 laps to go, 31.4”
Nederlands“Marie Tremblay, Tweede positie, nog 3 ronden, 31,4”
Español“Marie Tremblay, Segunda posición, quedan 3 vueltas, 31,4”
Deutsch“Marie Tremblay, Platz 2, noch 3 Runden, 31,4”

The test name is built into the software; it is not the name of an athlete in the session.
