Coupe Hollywood longue piste

An event in Time mode, from start to finish: the regional federation HSK (a member of SKF) organizes the Coupe Hollywood at the Starford oval, 400 m, with 40 women and 40 men over 500 m, 1000 m and 1500 m, each distance as two races, one per gender. You create the event from the federation template, import athletes and entries, form the pairs and quartets, send them to FINISH, then follow the race, correct, make the results official and broadcast the standings to TABLEAU.

1. Create the event from a template

The computer's context is Speed skating › Long track · Famousie › Hollywood · Anneau de Starford (see the context window).

  1. Open a new event's record

    FileOpen an event…, then New….

  2. Choose the type, then the template

Tick Time (the final time counts): the Template list then offers only Time templates. Choose the federation's shared template, SKF Longue piste — Temps · Shared (federation, version 3), and leave Create the races of the template ticked.

  3. Fill in the record

Name Coupe Hollywood longue piste (unique: it is the name of the heats' competition in FINISH), start 2026-11-14, end 2026-11-15, venue, track, federation (the context's, offered), organizer, entry dates and status. Confirm.

“Event “Coupe Hollywood longue piste” created with 6 race(s).” The event opens; the banner shows Coupe Hollywood longue piste (Time).

A new event's record, filled in for the Coupe Hollywood.
  1. The type comes first. It cannot be changed afterwards: an existing event's record shows it as plain text.
  2. The templates of the chosen type: first the shared templates of the context's national federation (the first is selected by default), then the computer's own, then the supplied examples. The origin is shown underneath.

2. Check the races and the track

The template created six races: 500 m Femmes, 500 m Hommes, 1500 m Femmes, 1500 m Hommes, 1000 m Femmes and 1000 m Hommes. In the SKF template, each race type allows both genders: EVENT then creates one race per gender and adds the gender to its name.

  1. Open the Races tab

The list shows, for each race, the Broadcast box, the distance, the mode (the template's model: Olympic style (pairs), (quartets) for the 1000 m), the Laps and the Track · start column as FINISH will receive them.

  2. Set the finish line and the start line

Choose the 1000 m Femmes. In the Track section of its record, leave Track length (m) empty (“Empty: 400 m (context: Long track)”) and Start line (m) empty (“Empty: computed (200 m)”). The Finish line (m after the track zero) comes from the template's race type: 56 m for the 500 m and 1500 m, 0 for the 1000 m. Check it, then Save.

The oval diagram and the sentence under it say what FINISH will receive.

The record of the 1000 m Femmes: finish at the zero, start 200 m before.
  1. The start line follows the FINISH convention: the distance from the start to the first crossing of the finish line (0: start on the finish line). Left empty, it is calculated: the remainder of the distance divided by the track (500 m: 100; 1000 m: 200; 1500 m: 300).
  2. The finish line is measured in meters after the zero of the track (the middle of the bottom straight), in the direction of racing.
  3. The partial first lap is highlighted. For the 500 m (finish at 56 m, line 100): start 356 m after the zero; for the 1500 m (finish at 56 m, line 300): start at 156 m.

3. Import the athletes

First the athlete database: the records (birth date, club, SKF member number, language, transponders), without entering them. The records will be used for all events.

  1. Open the import

    Entries tab → Import… (or FileImport entries…), then Choose a file…: athletes.csv.

“80 row(s), 16 column(s).” Separator and encoding are detected; the preview shows the first rows. “New format: mappings suggested from the headers.”

  2. Untick entering

Untick Enter the athletes in the open event (otherwise: athlete database only).

The Temps 500 m, Temps 1000 m and Temps 1500 m columns receive no field: each could go to two races (Women and Men), and in any case they would only be used for an entry. Catégorie indicative stays “(ignore)”: the category will be calculated in the event (step 5).

  3. Check the columns, match, import

Each header has received its field: Reference, Name, First name, Gender, Naissance → Date of birth, Club, Federation, Numéro de membre → Member no., Province / State, Language, Transponder no. 1 and no. 2. Click Match with the database →, then Import.

Empty database: 80 “New” rows. Report: “Athletes created: 80; records updated: 0; rows ignored: 0.” The member number goes into the affiliation with the federation in the Fédération column: a federation known to the common data makes the record “verified”; a federation not in the database is kept as an “Other” reference and the record stays “provisional”.

4. Import the entries

  1. Choose the entries file

Import… again, file inscriptions-coupe-hollywood.csv, and this time leave Enter the athletes in the open event ticked.

  2. Check the race fields

Headers that name a race of the event become race fields: “Inscrit 500 m Femmes” (a box: x, oui, 1, ✓… entered; empty, non, 0: not entered) and “Temps d'inscription 500 m Femmes” (a time, which also enters the athlete). The file has two columns of each kind per distance, one per race: each header contains the full name of its race.

The first step of the import: each column of the file and its field (excerpt).
  1. One field per race of the event, suggested from the header: the race's full name (“500 m Femmes”), otherwise its distance if only one race has it.
  1. Match

    Match with the database →.

    “80 found, 0 proposed, 0 ambiguous, 0 new, 0 skipped; 0 to resolve.” Each row finds the record created in step 3 (“same reference”). Under the grid: “Race entries: 500 m Femmes: 40; 500 m Hommes: 40; 1000 m Femmes: 37; 1000 m Hommes: 37; 1500 m Femmes: 32; 1500 m Hommes: 32.”

  2. Import

Keep Records already in the database: Fill in the record's empty fields and No category in the file: compute it (date of birth), then Import.

Report: “Event entries: 80 new, 0 already entered; race entries: 218.” and “Race entries created per race: 500 m Femmes: 40; 500 m Hommes: 40; …” The tab's grid shows one ticked box per race and the counters 500 m Femmes: 40, 500 m Hommes: 40, 1000 m Femmes: 37…

5. Categories and bibs

  1. Compute the categories

Without selecting anything (the batch action then applies to the list shown), click Compute categories and confirm.

Each entry receives the category for its age on the event's reference date (“Age on 2026-07-01”): U13, U15… Senior, Master 35… according to the discipline's categories.

  2. Assign the bibs

Bibs…: By gender, first number 101 for the women, 201 for the men, step 1, order Entry order. Assign.

“80 bib(s) assigned.” Maëlle Corbineau (A001) wears 101, Rosalie Duquerroy (A035) 135, Thibault Roncière (A041) 201. A number already worn is skipped and named; a duplicate bib stays red in the grid.

Reference: Compute categories, Bibs.

6. Seeding

Seeding (performance) is the time that ranks the entries before the heats are formed. The SKF template uses the entry time; other templates first use recent performances or the result of another race.

  1. Compute

Performances module, race 500 m Femmes → Compute seeding.

“Seeding computed: 40 entries, 0 without a time.” The grid gives each athlete's rank, the Seed time, its Source (“Entry”), their group and the details of the calculation.

  2. Correct a time if needed

Choose the athlete, type the Corrected time (“41.23” or “1:15.12”) and the Reason, then Correct. The correction is kept by the following calculations until Remove correction. Joker places the athlete ahead of the fastest (for all their races).

  3. Read the ChronoFEED performances (optional)

If the athletes have already raced in competitions timed by FINISH, ChronoFEED performances reads their results from the worldwide database (check Whole event for all races at once). An EVENT licence is needed and, in each record, the first name, last name, date of birth and country. EVENT sends neither name nor date: it computes a key per athlete (the status bar counts the keys), then decrypts the results itself.

“ChronoFEED summary: 40 entrant(s) read, 38 with a complete identity, 2 incomplete (date of birth × 2); … 31 written, 0 already in the database, 12 usable by the race's seeding.” The seeding is computed again; the two records without a date of birth are named in the event log, source “Calculation” (details).

7. Formation groups

The engine sorts the race's entries into formation groups (groups of 4 at the same level); the pairs are drawn within a group. Since our races are by gender, each group contains only women or only men.

  1. Expand the heat formation settings

Line-up sub-tab, collapsible Heat formation settings bar: Groups of N athletes, Size 4, Groups by gender unticked, No time: after the slowest; Pairs (heats of N lanes), Heat size 2, Slowest to fastest, Drawn within the group, Lanes drawn by lot.

The athletes column shows the groups: “Group 1” (4 athlete(s)), “Group 2”… each in its own shade. These settings come from the template: if changed, “they will be saved with the race at the next generation”.

  2. Move an athlete to another group

Drag an athlete's card onto another athlete in the column (top half: before them; bottom half: after them) or onto the header of a group (at the end of the group).

“Move Saskia Brouwers to group 3, at position 2”. The bar then says “Groups adjusted by hand: generation follows them.”; Recompute the groups goes back to the settings.

8. Generate the pairs and quartets

  1. The 500 m and 1500 m in pairs

    Race 500 m Femmes → Generate races.

“20 heat(s) generated.” Twenty pairs in running order, the athletes on the color of their lane (white inside, red outside). Do the same for the 500 m Hommes (20 pairs), the 1500 m Femmes and the 1500 m Hommes (16 pairs each).

  2. The 1000 m in quartets

Race 1000 m Femmes: its model has Quartets (settings bar). Generate races.

The pairs are grouped two by two: two consecutive pairs form a FINISH group (G1, G2…), side by side in the view, raced together on the track. With Group: unique start position, the positions follow on: 1-2 in the first pair, 3-4 in the second (white, red, yellow, blue). With 37 women, one pair is left incomplete: it starts alone, without a group (19 pairs, including 9 groups). The same goes for the 1000 m Hommes.

Line-up module, 1000 m Femmes in quartets: the two pairs of group G9 side by side, positions 1-2 and 3-4.
  1. Generate races applies the race's rule; the software keeps the draw (Replay redoes the same draw); with Whole event ticked, all races are generated at once.
  2. Quartets: the heats (here pairs) are grouped two by two. The heat size stays free: nothing is grayed out.
  3. Group: unique start position: within a group, the positions follow on from one heat to the next, so each athlete has their own color and transponders in FINISH.
  4. One row = one FINISH group (G9): its heats are side by side and start together.

9. Adjust with the mouse

Everything is done by drag and drop in the Line-up view. While dragging, a ghost card follows the mouse and a text under the cursor says exactly what is going to happen: what you see is what happens on drop. Each drop is written immediately, in the log, and can be undone with Ctrl+Z.

  1. Make a group by hand

    In the 500 m Hommes, drag “20. 500 m Hommes — P20” onto the right edge of “19. 500 m Hommes — P19”.

“Run with “500 m Hommes — P19”: to its right (new group)”. The two pairs form the last group; with Group: unique start position, P20 moves to positions 3-4 (yellow, blue).

  2. Lock what is decided

A card's padlock (or right-click → Lock or unlock) protects a heat from a regeneration and from any drag and drop.

Reference: Line-up view, Group: unique start position.

10. Name the heats

By default the heats are called “Pair 1”, “Pair 2”… The race record has a naming pattern.

  1. Write the pattern

    Races tab, 500 m Femmes, Heat names section: add the elements Distance, Text “m”, Gender, Text “— P”, Number (1, 2, 3) with 2 digits, or type {distance} m {genre} — P{numero:2} directly. The preview updates: “Its 20 heat(s): 500 m Femmes — P01, 500 m Femmes — P02, …”. Do the same for each race; for the 1000 m: {distance} m {genre} — {groupe} P{numero:2} (“1000 m Femmes — G1 P01”). The gender in the name keeps heat names unique within the event (FINISH recognizes them by name). Save.

  2. Apply

Line-up module → Rename heats. The pattern is also applied automatically at each generation and after the schedule.

  3. Name a heat by hand

The card's pencil opens a small window; the heat becomes “named by hand” and the pattern no longer renames it without asking you. An empty name gives it back to the pattern.

11. The schedule

  1. Set the durations

Schedule tab. The “Day 1” session starts on the first day at 9:00. Choose a row of the 500 m Femmes and set Duration of a heat of this race (min:s) to 2:00; the same for the 500 m Hommes, 3:30 for the 1500 m races.

  2. Add a break and a session

After the last 500 m Hommes: Add a break (“Resurfaçage”, 15:00). Before the 1000 m Femmes: Add a session (Day 2, 2026-11-15, 9:00). Drag the rows to change the order, or Ctrl+↑ / Ctrl+↓.

  3. Save

    Save (Ctrl+S).

Each heat receives its number and its planned time: what FINISH receives. The warnings (⚠, never blocking) point out an athlete who races again before the minimum gap.

12. Send to FINISH

Two ways, depending on whether FINISH shares EVENT's database or not (see the shared database).

Through the shared database (recommended)

  1. Send

Banner: Send to FINISH, and tick Automatic sending.

“FINISH: 110 heat(s) sent, 0 unchanged.” Each heat becomes a FINISH race, with its positions, colors, groups (G1…), distance, track and start line. From now on, every heat changed in EVENT is sent automatically two seconds later.

The heat order also goes through the database: the running order of each heat in the schedule (Schedule tab), then the order of the races and heats of the Composition. FINISH numbers its races 1, 2, 3… as after importing the .cfevent file. If you reorder (schedule, drag and drop, regeneration), the new order is written two seconds later (and at each reread), even without automatic sending: “Heat order given to FINISH at 10:42:15: 3 heat(s) reordered.”. A heat loaded or started in FINISH keeps its rank.

  2. Load in FINISH

FINISH: FileLoad a competition from the database…, choose “Coupe Hollywood longue piste”.

Then choose the events to load (all, by default). With FileAutomatic synchronization, FINISH follows the order of EVENT's schedule between two races.

  3. Read again

EVENT reads FINISH again when the Line-up module opens and every 30 seconds; Read FINISH again does it right away. An athlete changed in FINISH before the start comes back into the heat; if the same heat changed on both sides, the Differences between EVENT and FINISH window shows both line-ups: Keep EVENT, Take FINISH or Later. Nothing is settled silently.

Through a .cfevent file

Export to FINISH…: What (the whole event, one race, or ticked heats), Format .cfevent (everything goes across: colors, positions, helmets, language, rule, seeding), then Export…. In FINISH: FileOpen a session…. The exported heats become “exported” (yellow dot). Results come back through Import results (“Complete” .LIF files). The .evt format is for FinishLynx: colors, language, times of day and performances are lost.

13. Follow the race: the overall standings in tiles

While FINISH is timing, the Standings tab, Overall standings sub-tab, shows each athlete of the selected race on one row, with their heats and one tile per lap: one colored row per technology (PC photocell, TR transponder, PF photo finish, MAN manual timer), the time selected by FINISH (FIN) and the official time (OFF, bright green).

  1. Choose the race and the filter

Bar: race 1500 m Femmes (the gender filter is not needed: the race has only women). Display ▾ menu: Refresh every 5 s (never during an entry).

  2. Read the tiles

A red frame: the technologies do not agree on this lap (gap beyond the threshold, 0.05 s by default). An orange frame: a missing lap, a duplicate or an extra lap. The “?” button shows the legend.

Overall standings of the 1500 m Femmes: one row per athlete, one tile per lap (the partial first lap is 300 m).
  1. The Result tile: the time that ranks (in italics if provisional), the gap to the leader, OFF (the official time), MAN (the manual final time, to type in) and the points. Double-click: the Correct window.
  2. A lap tile: the lap time from PC and TR and the MAN cell, then FIN and OFF as cumulative times from the start. Only Milena's final time is official: the OFFs of the previous laps are faded.
  3. On Nora Ellingsen's third lap, the photocell and the transponder differ by 0.26 s: red frame, alert under the name.
  4. The Make official ▾ menu (step 15).

14. Enter a manual time

In pair P12 of the 1500 m Femmes, Justine Pelletreau's (#124) transponder fell off, and her partner broke the photocell just before her: Justine's only final time, the photocell's (2:24.980), is wrong. The manual timekeeper took 2:26.410.

  1. Type the manual final time

In the Result tile of her row, click in the MAN cell and type 2:26.41 (“2:26,41” or “2.26.41” on the numeric keypad also work), then Enter.

The row becomes “Modified (not saved)”, on a yellow background; a box says “1 unsaved correction(s)”.

  2. Save

Save corrections. The time is written in the manual timer cell of the overall standings; FINISH does not overwrite it.

  3. Make it the official time

Select the row: the floating bar appears at the bottom. Take the time of ▾ → Manual timing.

OFF = 2:26.410, status “Official time”. Ctrl+Z undoes the write, field by field.

15. Correct and make official

  1. Settle Nora Ellingsen's gap

Right-click tile T3 → Compare the technologies for this lap…: the judge chooses the photocell. Right-click tile T4 → Take this time: Photocell (2:16.730).

Nora's official final time becomes the photocell's (2:16.730 here).

  2. Correct a row

Double-click an athlete's block (or F2): the Correct window gives the official time, the points, the Annotation (code) with its Reason (DNF, DQ…) and the comment. Apply, then Save corrections.

  3. Make the race's overall standings official

Make official ▾ → Keep the provisional times as official… (the rows shown), then Save the official positions.

  4. Make the heats official

Results tab, race 1500 m Femmes. The results of each raced heat have been brought back from the database (FINISH being read again, or Import results → Read the database). Choose a heat, check it, Make the heat official.

“Heat 1500 m Femmes — P16 is official.” It is locked; the race becomes “Finished” when all its heats are official.

16. The “2x500+2x1500/3” combined standings

  1. Set up the standings

Standings tab, Combined standings sub-tab: Method “Combined event formula”, Formula 2x500+2x1500/3, Rank by “Category and gender”, Races counted: the 500 m (t500) and 1500 m (t1500) races, Women and Men. Both 500 m races have the same variable t500: each athlete races only one, and the formula takes theirs.

EVENT reads “2x500” as “2*t500”: the formula becomes 2*t500+2*t1500/3 (shown under the field). The calculation is redone with each change; the lowest total wins.

  2. Keep the settings

Save settings: they go into the event template. Then Export to CSV… or Print… (one table per unit).

17. Broadcast to TABLEAU

  1. Start broadcasting

Broadcast module → Start broadcasting. Keep Announce EVENT on the network every 2 s and give a Name shown by the scoreboards (“Coupe Hollywood”).

The standings of each ticked race go out to the scoreboards; only the differences follow, at most one second after each change. “Start” is remembered: broadcasting resumes at the next launch.

  2. Receive in TABLEAU

TABLEAU: tick Receive EVENT's overall standings, EVENT on the local network, and, under Overall standings (EVENT), a view of type “EVENT overall standings” (none chosen: the supplied view “Classement général (par défaut)”). The panel's Overall standings button shows it right away.

  3. Remove a race while you check

Untick Broadcast on the 1500 m Femmes row (in the module, or in the list of the Races tab: it is the same box).

The 1500 m Femmes disappears from the scoreboards at once (status “removed”) and is no longer sent as long as the box stays unticked; ticking it again sends it again.

Events of the open competition
Uncheck “Broadcast” to take an event off the scoreboards (results to be reviewed): it disappears at once. The same box is in the Events tab.
